Fast budget PC, no vertical DVD-RW drive Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5
I originally wanted to get the Gateway SX2840-01 that was on sale at Fry's Electronics for $399 to replace my seven-year-old 2.66GHz Pentium 4; that was until I learned the Core i3 530 was only a hyper-threaded dual core processor. One week later, for the same price, the Gateway SX2800-07 went on sale, with the Core2Quad Q8300 processor. I decided this is it.

Pros:
Core2Quad 8300 2.5GHz quad core processor
4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (expandable to 8GB, 4 DIMM slots, 2 available)
640GB 7200 RPM SATA II HDD. It's not 1TB unlike the SX2840 but I store my files on an external drive so not a problem for me, besides it's more than enough for now.
1 HDMI port, 1 eSATA port, 9USB ports, 1 IEEE1394 firewire, Gigabit Ethernet jack, digital (optical) audio out, 7.1 Dolby surround sound, and media card reader.

Cons:
18X DVD-RW with label flash. Although the eject button takes more pressure than usual to respond, it isn't as bad as the on-display system in-store. The main issue is, the case is designed to stand vertically, there are two rubber feet on the bottom and none on the sides, but the DVD-RW drive, must lie horizontally when used. The disc tray has no clip in the middle unlike what you get in most PC laptops to keep the disc in place while ejecting. An alternative would have been a slot loading drive. I wonder if the designers thought of this, or is it really "you get what you pay for." I decided to keep the system despite this since I rarely use the drive.

Cannot rotate screen orientation, as another reviewer pointed out, although the display settings suggests the possibility. Not a problem for me.

Intel GMA X4500HD. Because of the slim case and 220Watt power supply, graphics upgrade options are limited if any. I don't plan on playing games on this so not a problem either.

No speakers.

Overall I give this system four stars out of five given the shortcomings and would still recommend it for the price.

Great PC for a HTPC Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
I bought 2 of these, one for running VM's and the other for the center piece of my home theatre. I used this to clip the cable in Dec and we have never looked back. I run it (via HDMI) to a 55" LG LCD TV. I run Boxee, PlayOn, Netflix, Hulu, and WMC on it and we have not missed a day of Cable TV. I have not tried a TV tuner in it yet, I will probably do that soon. It is a great little box to use as the center piece of a home theatre, it can handle just about anything thrown at it.
BTW, it runs virtual machines pretty darn well too.

New Computer Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5
I like this unit a lot. It was a pleasant surprise when I wanted to install it - no more tidies installation of all software needed. Windows is already installed. Microsoft office and Norton antivirus are installed as trial version and internet is just plug and play. Cannot be any easier.

The only thing is recommended it to create back up CDs. Surprise here you need to have at least 3 DVD (not CD) for it and another one for Drivers. It worth it just in case, but DVDs!

Another small issue - be aware that not all your plugins (like fax/scanner) that worked on Windows XP or Vista will work with Wondows 7. Be prepared to download drivers from the web. Also make sure that your unit has warranty. If it doesn't and drivers were not downloaded properly, you will have to pay for the service (about $20 and up).

Unit is fast, but probably not fastest. I like small pop-up bar on the bottom and that desktop background can be a slide show as well.

Would recommend for moderate use. Not good for very heavy graphic games.

Best value - and works as vmware ESXI server! Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
I've purchased 6 of these computers for my office. Is powerful, quiet, works well. One product design defect is the optical disk drive eject button, you have to press it HARD to eject for it to make contact (through a lever hidden inside) with the button on the actual drive.

BONUS: this works out of the box as a vmware ESXI server, installs flawlessly and virtualization on bios is even enabled by default.
Bought this at Fry's Electrics on sale a few days ago for an unbelievable $399.
Other bonus is that it can hold 8GB ram -- and 2 slots are free (comes with 2 slots filled with 2GB each). So for another $100, I now have an 8gb VMware ESXI server.

Impossible to build this yourself from parts any cheaper.

great buy Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
This is a great product, I bought it and am currently using it everyday as a media center console. HD internet content playback is no problem at all (but run the windows updates first, otherwise there will be slight glitches in the playback). Overall, this is a small, good, yet powerful system.
